Blind Tasting Competitions

A Certified Sommelier will introduce a set of wines to all your guests, which will be served blind. However, to help participants identify these classic set of wines from around the world, a Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT) exercise will be delivered beforehand, so that your attendees will understand the structural components and aromatic characteristics of grapes and their origin. Participants will be given lexicon to describe particular aromatics and flavors and will soon discover that blind tasting of wines is not a parlor game, but a step by step approach in how to determine a wines identity through examination and analysis. Also, this class is meant to be fun and interactive with prizes awarded at the end to claim bragging rights for correct answers…

Horizontal Wine Tasting Events

A horizontal wine tasting is another classic wine tasting event. Like a vertical wine tasting, it plays around with vintage versus producer differences to craft an interesting comparative tasting. While a vertical tasting focuses on several vintages from a single producer or vineyard, a horizontal tasting includes just one vintage. It is another interesting theme which can make your wine tasting party more fun as well as more focused on a particular topic.

A horizontal tasting has only wines from the same vintage. In addition, the wines included usually all have something more in common. For example, the wines are often all from the same region. For example, you could compare the different Cabernet Sauvignons made by Beaulieu Vineyard Napa Cabernet, the Beringer Sonoma Cabernet & the Smith & Hook from the Central Coast. Generally, the wines do come from the same general region or else the vintage characteristics can be quite different. There are no absolute rules for what wines can be included in a single vintage horizontal, but we will come up with a fun group of wines that have something in common.

This wine tasting theme gives your guests a great insight into the characteristics that are unique to a given vintage in a particular wine producing region. You can sample wines from different producers and different styles and see how the vintage characteristics are similar, or not, amongst them. This teaches your attendees a lot about that particular vintage in that region. It is also fun to compare different producers to see which managed better than others that year.

Vertical Tasting

A vertical wine tasting is an assessment of a group of wines based on vintage years. It is a terrific way to experience just how different every year can be in the world of wine. It can also enhance your understanding of the many factors that play subtle roles in a single wine.
Vertical wine tasting events is a fun way to entertain a small party of guests. It also promotes conversation among wine lovers and beginners alike. Everyone can learn and gain new perspectives while having a great time.
- You will get a better feel for a particular winery’s varietal style and composition with this type of tasting.
- You can also see how unique weather patterns may affect the grapes from one year to the next.
- Vertical wine tastings are fun for a round robin-style of entertaining. Get the same group together at a different home with a new host or hostess and explore many wines over a few months. You'll build on each experience and get to know a lot of wines together.

Mix It Up: Uncovering the Mysteries of Food & Wine Pairings

(60 to 90-minute session)

When food and wine are tasted together there will be a reaction, either positive or negative. More often than not food is the culprit for why many food & wine pairings don’t go well together. Think about if you’ve ever brushed your teeth with tooth paste and then drank a glass of orange juice, yikes! For most of us this pairing does not work well, so it is with many food & wine pairings. In this class we will explore what works and what doesn’t with regards to food & wine pairings.

We will use 4 simple ingredients (trail mix) and 4 wines to show how wine & food can be enjoyed together by either contrasting or complementing each other’s flavors, textures, and varietal characteristics

At the conclusion of this class participants will have a better idea of how wine and food can complement each other or not. Having completed this session attendees can feel confident about ordering a wine at a restaurant or family & friends’ gatherings and know that their selection will make the evening both enjoyable and eventful.

Bon appetite!

Old World vs. New World

In this class attendees will be given a brief history of how viticulture and vinification has evolved from before the Roman Empire to the present day in both the Old World and New World. Also, participants will discover that not all wines taste the same even though they can be clearly identified as a Chardonnay, Cabernet or Riesling and this is dependent upon where they come from. This Certified Sommelier led event will take your guests to France & California and explain how today both the Old Word (Terroir or Sense of Place) and New World( Modern Technology & Science Techniques) have come together. For fun there will be a blind tasting of two wines to determine what hemisphere the wines come from.

The Wines of France

Explore the wines of France while enjoying classic varietals from Burgundy, Bordeaux and Alsace.

We will unravel the mystery’s behind the names, labels and regions that make its wines so complicated, but no longer.

After attending this fun & fact filled class, you’ll be able to order wines from a restaurant wine list with confidence.

“Viva la France”

The Wines of Italy

Ferrari, Sophia Loren, Pizza & Chianti what is up with our fascination with this country’s culture, food & wine?

Italy has over 750 grape varietals from 20 different regions, whiskey, tango, foxtrot (WTF…)???

Find out why Italian food is the most popular cuisine in America, could it be the wine?

In this class we will taste wines from Tuscany, Piemonte & Veneto and discuss the endless food & wine pairing possibilities.

Come join us for a wine tour of Italy and find out for yourself what makes its wines so appealing!
